Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik Passes Away at 79


Veteran politician and former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik has passed away at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 1:10 PM at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications.
Months-Long Health Struggle
Malik had been admitted to the hospital on May 11, 2025, and was receiving regular dialysis. On June 8, he took to social media to share a concerning health update, calling his condition “serious”. A day before that, he revealed that he had been hospitalised for over a month due to kidney issues.
His personal secretary, KS Rana, confirmed the news of his passing on Tuesday, bringing an end to a long public life that spanned decades of political and administrative service.
A Life in Public Service
Satyapal Malik served in various capacities across India’s political landscape. Most notably, he held the position of Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, overseeing a critical and historic period that included the abrogation of Article 370.
He also served as the Governor of Goa and Meghalaya, and was known for his outspoken views on national issues, even after demitting office. A political veteran, Malik began his career in the early 1970s, and over the years aligned with multiple parties, including the BJP, Janata Dal, and others.
