In a significant reshuffle of the Tamil Nadu Police force, the state government has transferred 18 officers, promoted three, and reinstated a senior officer previously under suspension. This large-scale reorganization is aimed at strengthening leadership and improving operational efficiency across the police administration.

Reinstatement of DIG D. Magesh Kumar

One of the most notable developments is the reinstatement of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) D. Magesh Kumar. Kumar had been suspended in February 2025 over allegations of sexual and physical harassment during his tenure as Joint Commissioner of Police (North Zone), Greater Chennai Police. However, after a detailed investigation, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) cleared him of all charges, leading to his suspension being revoked in April 2025.

DIG Magesh Kumar, who had been held in the Vacancy Reserve at the police headquarters pending inquiry, has now been appointed as DIG of the Coastal Security Group, Chennai. He replaces R. Jayanthi, who has been posted as DIG, Technical Services, Chennai.

Key IPS Transfers and Postings

The Tamil Nadu Home Department’s reshuffle covers several high-profile IPS transfers:

  • M.R. Sibi Chakravarthi has been posted as DIG and Chief Vigilance Officer at Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL), Chennai, moving from DIG/Joint Commissioner of Police, South Zone, Greater Chennai Police.

  • Pakerla Cephas Kalyan will take over Chakravarthi’s previous role in the South Zone, moving from DIG/Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone.

  • Disha Mittal has been transferred from DIG, Villupuram Range, to DIG/Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone.

  • E.S. Uma is moved from DIG, Salem Range, to DIG, Villupuram Range.

At the SP level:

  • G. Nagajothi IPS has been posted as SP-I, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), Chennai.

  • Amanat Mann IPS, who was in the Vacancy Reserve, is now appointed Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Social Justice and Human Rights, Chennai.

  • S.P. Lavanya IPS becomes SP, State Crime Records Bureau, replacing G. Nagajothi.

Among Deputy Commissioners of Police:

  • B. Geetha moves from Salem City to Greater Chennai Police Headquarters.

  • V. Geetha replaces B. Geetha in Salem City, arriving from Tirunelveli.

  • A. Velmurugan takes over as DCP, Central Crime Branch, Tambaram Commissionerate, replacing K. Prabakar, who will serve as SP-III, Cyber Crime Wing, Chennai.

Promotions to Higher Ranks

Three police officers have been promoted:

  • Kelkar Subhramanya Balachandra becomes DCP, South, Salem City.

  • Kambham Samuel Praveen Gowtham and V. Prasannakumar have been promoted to SP rank and posted as DCPs in Tiruppur and Tirunelveli, respectively.

Why This Reshuffle Matters

This large-scale police reshuffle underscores the Tamil Nadu government’s focus on robust law enforcement, modernization, and responsive policing. By placing experienced officers in critical roles — from cybercrime and coastal security to social justice and technical services — the state aims to address both emerging and traditional law and order challenges effectively.

The reinstatement of DIG D. Magesh Kumar, after his exoneration by the ICC, highlights the administration’s emphasis on due process while ensuring capable leadership in key security posts.

This police restructuring is expected to support better crime prevention, streamline police resources, and enhance public safety across Tamil Nadu.
