A Sharp Drop, But the Crisis Isn’t Over

Virginia made national headlines recently for a reason we’ve long hoped to see: overdose deaths in the state fell by 43% in 2024, including a 44% drop in fentanyl-related fatalities, according to the Virginia Department of Health. It’s an encouraging shift that reflects years of public health work expanded access to naloxone, more harm reduction initiatives, and growing awareness around opioid dangers.
But the truth is, more than 1,300 people in Virginia still lost their lives to overdose last year. Behind every one of those statistics is a name, a face, and a grieving family. We know, because we’re often the ones those families call when they don’t know what else to do.
When Waiting Doesn’t Work Anymore
Families reach out to us when hope feels fragile when their loved one has declined into addiction, and every attempt at helping has led to frustration, fear, or silence. What we offer isn’t magic. It’s structure, compassion, and a way forward.
As trained interventionists in Virginia, we work across the state from Norfolk to Charlottesville, Richmond to Northern Virginia guiding families through one of the hardest conversations they’ll ever have. Our team includes Brad Garraway, Roger Patteson, Kathryn Guigui, Briana Hente, Wade Meadows, and Chip Burson, all committed to helping people find a path out of crisis.
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. We take the time to understand your family dynamic, your loved one’s history, and what’s at stake because that’s the only way an intervention can truly be effective.
What Intervention Means to Us
To us, an intervention is not a confrontation it’s an invitation. We help families prepare, learn what to say, and how to say it. We guide you in setting boundaries that come from love, not punishment. When the time comes, we lead the conversation gently, clearly, and with the goal of opening a door to treatment.
If your loved one says yes to help, we’re ready. We coordinate treatment planning, transport, and aftercare. We don’t disappear once the conversation ends we stay with you, helping make sure the transition into recovery is supported and steady.
Why Early Action in Virginia Still Matters
Even as overdose numbers decline, we can’t afford to be complacent. Many Virginia communities still report high rates of addiction-related ER visits. Mental health issues like trauma, anxiety, and depression are woven into so many of the stories we hear. And far too often, families wait until they’re faced with an overdose, arrest, or hospitalization before reaching out.
We believe in acting sooner. Intervening before crisis. Giving people the chance to recover before addiction takes more away from them or from you.
That’s why we do this work. Because when families have structure and support, they can be powerful forces for change.
We’ve Seen What Recovery Can Look Like
Recovery doesn’t start in rehab. It starts at home with a family that refuses to give up, and with a plan that makes healing possible. We’ve seen what’s possible when people feel supported, when they’re met with compassion instead of judgment, and when they’re given a real chance to say yes to life again.
