Why I'm Merging Quantitative Thinking with Computer Science: My MAC + Quant Journey

Patterns have always fascinated me - in math, in codes and in systems. It was this curiosity, that brought me to BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus, where I am currently a first-year student, aiming to get a branch change to Mathematics and Computing (MAC).

But I’m not stopping there. I’m building a roadmap that blends mathematics, programming, and quantitative thinking. A roadmap that will be documented publicly.

This is my first post, and here’s what I’m planning.

Why Mathematics and Computation specifically? To me, MAC represents something that’s more than just a degree. It is the intersection of mathematics, data, and computing, a near perfect bridge between theory and practice for quantitative fields. It’s the perfect base for anyone looking to explore research, quantitative finance, or algo modelling.

I’m drawn to its versatility - you can go from building models to writing algorithms that can make decisions in the real-world. The prospect of seeing my code influence real-world systems is incredibly exciting.

What Draws Me to Quant?

I discovered the world of quantitative finance and statistical modelling during JEE prep - the kind of problems that truly rewards deep reasoning and probabilistic thinking.

I don’t want to just know machine learning and algorithms. I want to understand why they work and use that knowledge to model complex systems from financial markets to real-world behaviors.

MAC Goals + Quant Foundations: My Dual Path

I’ve broken my roadmap into two parts:

a. Branch Change to MAC:

  • Focusing on CGPA, core subjects, and academic prep.

  • Courses I’m targeting: Linear Algebra, Calculus, Python Basics.

b. Quant + CS Growth

  • Build a quant style foundation early.

  • study probability and stats beyond the syllabus.

  • Start learning Python for data, simulations and modelling.

  • Build ½ mini quant/stats projects

I will also explore platforms like QuantInsti, QuantStart, and YouTube channels that go beyond theory.

What to Expect from Future Posts?

I will be posting regularly about:

  • My study plans and course reviews.

  • What I learn from projects and resources.

  • Mistakes and Mindset shifts.

  • Tools and Content that help me build real skills.

This isn’t just a journal - I hope it becomes a resource for others on the same path.

I’m still figuring things out, but sharing openly, like in a blog, helps me stay accountable - and might help someone else too.

Join me on this journey- If you’re into quant, math, or MAC, or just figuring out your own path, let’s connect!
