England all-rounder Chris Woakes suffered a shoulder injury while fielding on day one of the fifth Test between England and India at The Oval, London. The injury forced him to sit out the rest of the match, preventing him from batting or bowling.
Despite this, Chris Woakes returned to the field in the second innings with his shoulder in a sling, as England chased a challenging target on day five. Although England fell short by six runs, his courageous presence was widely praised.
Chris Woakes injury was a significant setback for England, leaving them a bowler short during a crucial phase. India secured a narrow victory by bowling England out for 367 runs while chasing 374, leveling the series at 2-2.
Chris Woakes Shares Messages from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant After The Oval Test
In an interview with The Guardian, Chris Woakes revealed that Shubman Gill praised him for his courageous performance during The Oval test. Woakes also shared that Rishabh Pant sent him a supportive voice note wishing him a smooth recovery.
“Shubman said something like, ‘That was incredibly brave.’ I replied, ‘You’ve had an unbelievable series, well played, and credit to your team,’” Chris Woakes recounted.
He continued, “I noticed Rishabh posted a picture of me on Instagram with a salute emoji, so I thanked him, saying, ‘Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK.’ He then sent me a voice note saying, ‘I hope all is OK, good luck with the recovery, and I hope we meet again out there some day.’ Of course, I apologized for the broken foot.”
Pant had sustained a foot injury in the fourth test at Old Trafford, Manchester, after being struck on the shoe by Chris Woakes yorker in the first innings. Although he left the field immediately, Pant returned to bat the next day and scored a half-century. Unfortunately, he was ruled out of the fifth test due to the injury.
The five-match test series between England and India concluded in a 2-2 draw. England secured wins in the first and third tests by five wickets and 22 runs, respectively, while India triumphed in the second and fifth tests by 336 runs and six runs. The fourth test ended in a draw.
