Break the Silence: Make Mental Health Education Mandatory in Indian Schools

Every three minutes, India loses a precious life to suicide. Behind each number is a heartbreaking story — a child, a parent, a friend who felt invisible, unheard, and unsupported. With 468 lives lost every day and over 1.7 lakh annually, India sadly holds the grim title of the world’s suicide capital.

Mental health is a silent pandemic sweeping through our nation. Of the 150 million Indians who need care, only 30 million get help. The rest endure their battles alone, swallowed by stigma and neglect.

But this silence can be broken — and it starts with education.

We urge the Supreme Court of India to mandate mental health education from the very first standard. Why? Because early intervention can save lives. Children’s brains undergo critical development in their formative years. Teaching them to understand emotions, build resilience, and seek help creates a generation capable of facing life’s challenges with strength and compassion.

Imagine a future where families are free from the shadows of untreated mental illness, where fewer crimes occur because underlying issues are addressed early, and where every child grows up emotionally intelligent and supported.

This is not just a moral plea; it’s a national necessity. Mental health issues cost India over USD 1 trillion in lost productivity by 2030. Untreated mental illness fuels 95% of crimes. Addressing this early through education can change the course of our nation.
