1. First Time Eating KFC

Today, while playing with my baby, I ordered two servings of KFC’s New Orleans Wings. Seeing my child enjoy the meal, I reflected on my own journey.

Before graduating from university, I had only tried KFC once in my life.

That experience dates back to high school, when my cousin married a woman from the county town. Her family was involved in real estate, placing them at a different social level than my cousin, but she treated us to a meal.

My brother ordered a family bucket—it felt like a celebration for us. Though my brother and that cousin-in-law later parted ways, I remain grateful to her. She introduced me to KFC and revealed that such delicious food existed in the world.

My younger brother was present too; he even commented that it didn’t taste good. My brother responded, “You should have said so earlier—we’re still hungry.” In the 2010s, KFC was a rare luxury in our area. Back then, my brother and his wife were deeply in love, and she showed great care for me and my brother, acknowledging our rural background.

At university, I still couldn’t afford KFC, but there was a cheaper option called Wallace. Once, while at my ex-boyfriend’s place, I ordered 50 RMB worth of Wallace food. He remarked, “You sure know how to spend money—just don’t let my dad see this.”

At that time, 50 RMB was a significant amount for us.

We secretly ate those Wallace burgers in the room. They were delicious, and every burp filled me with joy.

However, that incident highlighted our incompatibility. He viewed 50 RMB as a fortune not to be wasted on such food, whereas my taste buds knew exactly the kind of life I desired.

Eating KFC Again

Later, while working at a clothing store, the manager hailed from Anhui province. They loved noodles, but I found noodles unsatisfying and often unpleasant, sometimes even disgusting. Once, I had shredded pork with pickled vegetables noodles and discovered a fly in the vegetables. When I informed the plump auntie, she dismissed it, saying flies contain protein. Unhappy, I still paid. 😭

On days I didn’t bring lunch, I’d order the work meal. KFC offered combos priced around 18 to 20 RMB, always including cola. I adored the New Orleans Wings but couldn’t afford them alone. If they came in a combo, I’d splurge and savor the meal.

My salary then was 3500 RMB. After six months, I saved enough to buy a washing machine and TV for my family, earning praise from village elders. People assumed I was thriving away from home.

But it was tough. I hated taking the bus due to motion sickness. Commuting for morning and evening shifts left me feeling deeply depressed.

2. Entering Crypto and Saying Goodbye to KFC

In late 2015, I met my first boss while taking a Didi ride in his BMW. Didi had just launched in Nanjing, with fares just over 2 RMB. Buses cost 2 RMB too, but transfers added up to 4 RMB, so I naturally chose Didi.

My boss thought I was open to sharing ideas. After attending an Amway course, I rode home with him. He believed that since I accepted courses like Amway’s, I’d be receptive to crypto or financial pyramid schemes.

My boss ran crypto-based financial pyramid schemes. Fresh out of graduation, I knew little. During his meetings, I diligently served his clients.

Once, for business, he introduced us to #Bitcoin and #Ethereum. My eyes lit up. Ethereum had plunged from over $20 to $3, leaving users despondent, but then it surged past $800 (details are fuzzy, possibly slightly off). I first encountered Yunbi exchange and went home to research deposits and withdrawals.

Sadly, from late 2016 to 2017, I missed a 20 million RMB opportunity. Yunbi featured many coins like SC that surged a thousand-fold. I nearly ranked in the platform’s top 100 holders but sold out after some fluctuations.

Crypto awakened my greed. From then on, I scorned working for others and enrolled in a semi-pyramid scheme course costing about 80,000 RMB. How could someone earning 3500 RMB monthly afford that?

Loans, credit cards, and online lending became my primary funding sources. Over the next years, I sank into debt hell.

I borrowed 30,000 RMB and repaid over 50,000 RMB to Yirendai within a year—a memory that remains vivid.

Later, the course-promising company collapsed, squeezing people like me dry. Companies went bankrupt, marriages ended, and young individuals like me lived burdened by debt.

During that course, I also met a scoundrel who tricked me into fake forex investments in 2017, costing me and friends over 100,000 RMB.

By then, I no longer qualified to sit down and enjoy KFC.

After my university internship and returning for graduation, I passed a KFC and swallowed hard. I told elders in a chat group that I longed to indulge in KFC.

One lady offered 50 RMB for me to eat freely, but I declined.

3. The Days Without KFC Qualifications

During my darkest, most indebted days, in the 2017 crypto bull market post the ‘94 incident’, many coins surged hundreds to thousands of times. My EOS holdings on an exchange yielded 10x profits, totaling tens of thousands. This opened my eyes.

Borrowing Money Revealed People’s True Colors

Everyone praised me, calling me hardworking and promising. But when I asked for a loan, a gentle lady turned fierce like a tiger. She claimed she was at a KTV, couldn’t hear me, had no money, and told me to ask others. Previously, she’d said she pitied me and wanted to give me 5,000 RMB. This abrupt shift left me speechless.

Decided to Borrow 80,000 Online

I found a young guy online eager to lend me money, taking a high interest cut.

Fortunately, a senior Chinese ICP investor and ambassador I call “Senior Brother” met me once in Nanjing and gave me 50,000 RMB, advising against further borrowing.

He was from Shandong. I still recall his kindness. But I remained poor. The ICP private sale we joined never issued tokens for years during the bear market. Eventually, my senior brother ran out of funds and demanded repayment. At that time, I was likely pregnant and drowning in debt, unable to repay. I felt truly remorseful.
