Step-by-Step: Setting Up a Scalable Virtual Machine Scale Set With Load Balancer In Azure Portal

In this guide, we’ll walk through the process of creating a Virtual Machine Scale Set in the Azure Portal—from configuring basic settings and scaling rules to setting up a load balancer. By the end, you’ll have a fully functional and scalable VMSS running on Ubuntu, ready to serve traffic efficiently and securely. This step-by-step tutorial is perfect for anyone looking to get hands-on with Azure’s scaling capabilities, even if it’s their first time.

Go to portal.azure.com.

Search for the virtual machine scale set and click into it.

Click on create.

Give your virtual machine scale set a name and select your preferred region.

Select your Availability zone.

Orchestration mode: Flexible.

Security type: Trusted launch virtual machine.

Instance count: Click on configure scaling options.

Click on the pen icon to add a scaling condition.

Edit your scaling condition as you wanted and save.

And save to return to the basic settings.

Image: select the Ubuntu image.

Size: Standard.

Administrator account: select password.

Give your account a username and password.

Scaling configuration: Click on configure to set a load balancer.

Click on the pen icon to create a load balancer.

Give your load balancer a name.

Type: public.

Protocol: TCP.

Rules: check all the 2 boxes and click on create.

Click on Review + Create.

After successfully creating, click on Go to resource.
