Choosing Wooden Toys: My Preference Despite Warnings

Wooden toys have been a staple in children’s playrooms for generations. They are sturdy, timeless, and often beautifully crafted. But in recent years, I’ve noticed a wave of scary stories circulating online—concerns about paint chipping, splinters, and even toxic materials hiding behind the label “natural.”
As a parent (and someone who admittedly spends far too much time reading product reviews), I’ve asked myself: Are wooden toys really worth it?
The Fear is Real—But Context Matters
I’ve read the horror stories. One parent found sharp splinters in a wooden train set. Another reported peeling paint on a teething toy. These are valid concerns—especially when babies tend to explore the world by putting everything in their mouths.
But here’s the thing: not all wooden toys are created equal. Many of these issues come from poor-quality manufacturing or lack of proper safety testing. When made with high-quality hardwood, non-toxic finishes, and smooth sanding, wooden toys remain one of the safest play options.
Why I Still Trust Wooden Toys
Durability – My child’s wooden stacking blocks have survived drops, throws, and even a week in the backyard.
Sensory Connection – The warmth of real wood, the weight in a child’s hand, and the natural grain patterns offer a sensory experience plastic can’t match.
Educational Value – Many wooden toys are designed to encourage open-ended play, problem-solving, and creativity.
How to Choose Safely
If you’re worried about safety, here’s my quick checklist:
Look for non-toxic, water-based paints and finishes.
Prefer solid hardwood (like beech or maple) over cheap composites.
Check for smooth edges—run your finger over every surface.
Buy from brands that publish safety certifications and meet ASTM or EN71 standards.
The Bottom Line
Yes, the scary stories exist. And yes, they can be alarming. But they’ve also made me a more informed buyer. By being selective, I’ve found wooden toys that are not only safe but have become some of my child’s most cherished playthings.
Because at the end of the day, I want toys that last, inspire creativity, and connect my child to the feel of the natural world—and for me, wooden toys still win.
