I entered Weapons anticipating a solid horror experience. I exited feeling as if I had been struck in the stomach and whispered to in the shadows simultaneously.

The beginning is silent—almost too silent. Then it occurs: 17 children, in the dead of night, simply rise and leave their homes. No screams, no chaos. Just this unsettling, synchronized procession into the darkness. The following morning, only one returns. And that’s when the true fear begins to take hold.

The narrative doesn’t unfold in a linear fashion. Instead, Flixtor new domain shifts between viewpoints—parents, teachers, police—each harboring their own fractures and secrets. Julia Garner portrays Justine, a teacher who genuinely cares for her students but is burdened by things she isn’t ready to disclose. Josh Brolin plays Archer, a father balancing on the edge of sorrow and fury. They serve as the emotional core of the film, making you experience every bit of dread and powerlessness.

And then there’s Gladys. Alex’s great-aunt. The type of character you instantly recognize as trouble the moment she appears on screen. Amy Madigan embodies her with a perfect blend of small-town charm and “I know something you don’t.” The witchcraft aspects—the trances, the rituals, the thorns—are frightening not because they are loud or extravagant, but because they feel ancient, as if they have been occurring in the shadows for centuries.

What truly affected me was how the film portrays fear. It’s not solely about jump scares (though there are a few that will catch you off guard). It’s more about that gradual, suffocating realization that the world isn’t as secure or as ordinary as you believed. One moment you’re in a serene kitchen, the next you’re witnessing the most unsettling scene involving a mundane household item—and suddenly, you can’t unsee it.
