Building a Thinking Model with Chain-of-Thought Prompting


Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful tools for generating text, answering questions, and even writing code. But at their core, most models are non-thinking—they predict the next word based on patterns in data. So how do we transform these statistical engines into something that feels like it’s reasoning?
Enter Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting—a technique that unlocks reasoning capabilities in LLMs by guiding them to think step-by-step.
What Is a Non-Thinking Model?
Most LLMs, like GPT-style models, are trained to predict the next token. They don’t have consciousness, beliefs, or true understanding. They excel at pattern recognition, not logic.
No internal reasoning process
Outputs based on statistical data
Complex tasks (e.g., math, logic)
Example:
“If there are 3 apples and I buy 2 more, how many apples do I have?”
A non-thinking model might answer incorrectly if the prompt is ambiguous or complex, because it doesn’t simulate a step-by-step thought process—it just predicts likely words.
What Is Chain-of-Thought Prompting?
Chain-of-Thought prompting is a technique where you explicitly ask the model to reason step-by-step before giving an answer. This mimics how humans solve problems and helps the model generate more accurate and interpretable responses.
Example:
“There are 3 iPhone. I buy 2 more.
First, count the iPhone I already have: 3.
Then, add the 2 I bought. 3 + 2 = 5. So, I have 5 iPhone.”
Why Chain-of-Thought Works?
CoT works because it activates reasoning pathways in the model. By prompting it to “think aloud,” we guide it to break down problems instead of jumping to conclusions.

Improved accuracy on multi-step tasks
Better interpretability and debugging
Enables emergent reasoning in models not explicitly trained for it
