Superman 2025: The Return of the Man of Steel in a New DC Era

Superman 2025, directed by James Gunn, marks the very first step in the new DC cinematic universe (DCU) and stands as one of the most significant redefinitions of this iconic character in recent years. After more than a decade away from the big screen, Clark Kent returns once again to don the red cape and remind us why Superman continues to be the most inspiring hero in the world of superheroes.
Story: A Balance Between Humanity and Power
The film presents a fresh take on Clark Kent—a humble journalist at the Daily Planet who must also bear the immense responsibility of being Earth’s protector. Torn between his alien origins and his human heart, Clark struggles to find balance between an ordinary life and extraordinary duty. This journey intensifies when new threats and powerful enemies emerge, pushing him to rely more than ever on his values and inner strength.
James Gunn avoids retelling Superman’s origin story and instead focuses on new challenges and human relationships. This choice keeps the narrative fresh, fast-paced, and free of clichés, drawing audiences into action and emotion from the very beginning.
James Gunn’s Direction: A Blend of Emotion and Action
Known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn has proven himself a master of mixing humor, emotion, and superhero spectacle. In Superman 2025, he follows the same path. The movie delivers large-scale action and dazzling visual effects while also offering quiet, heartfelt moments that add depth to the character. Sometimes it feels like a refreshing breeze in the superhero genre; other times, it resembles cinematic fast food—entertaining but not always fulfilling.
Cast: The Hero and His Nemesis Shine
At the heart of the film, David Corenswet truly embodies Clark Kent/Superman. After gaining 40 pounds of muscle, he fully inhabits the physical presence of the character. Yet it’s not just his physique that impresses—Corenswet captures Superman’s human side: a hero who smiles, jokes, and wrestles with inner doubts.
Opposite him, Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane—a bold and fearless journalist who carries the emotional weight of the story and grounds Superman’s humanity.
Perhaps the most striking presence after Superman himself is Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Hoult delivers a mix of charisma, cool calculation, and menace—a character whose eyes radiate danger even when he’s smiling.
Special Appearances and Memorable Moments
The film sprinkles in touching tributes and surprises for longtime fans. One notable moment is the cameo of Will Reeve, son of the late Christopher Reeve, who briefly appears as a TV reporter. For many, this is a nostalgic and emotional nod to the legacy of the Superman films of the past.
Nathan Fillion also appears as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner)—a role that has become a trademark of his collaborations with James Gunn. Another delightful surprise is the inclusion of Krypto, Superman’s beloved dog. This time, Krypto doesn’t speak but is inspired by Gunn’s real-life pet dog, Ozu, adding a charming and grounded presence.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The film’s strengths include its careful character development of Superman, strong lead performances, and an emotionally powerful score that conveys hope and grandeur. The cinematography—especially during Superman’s flight sequences—is breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
On the downside, some critics have pointed out that the screenplay feels crowded and scattered. Too many secondary characters are introduced without proper development, making parts of the story feel shallow. Certain battle sequences also come across as too similar to Gunn’s previous works or other superhero films, reducing their originality.
Superman 2025: A Return of Hope or a Repetition of the Past?
Superman 2025 is by no means a flawless masterpiece, but it serves as a promising new beginning for DC’s next era. Above all, the film seeks to revive Superman’s essence as a symbol of hope and humanity. Despite narrative flaws and some recycled visuals, Corenswet’s outstanding performance, combined with Hoult’s commanding presence and Brosnahan’s heartfelt portrayal, makes the film a worthwhile experience for fans.
In the end, the film answers an age-old question: What truly makes a hero? James Gunn’s answer is clear—superpowers are only part of the story. It is humanity, sacrifice, and hope that define a real hero.
