The Bigger Picture

Data is not just a collection of numbers; it is a key asset to developing a strategic business mindset. This project was developed as a part of my journey to understand the world of data as a key component in business today. It is an end-to-end approach to transforming a raw dataset into a powerful business tool. My goal was not to build a dashboard, but to create a comprehensive data pipeline that could answer a critical business question and provide a foundation for data-driven decision-making.

The ‘What’ and The ‘Why’

The core challenge addressed by this project is to understand the characteristics of the customers who fell victim to card fraud. In the banking sector, according to UK Finance, over 570 million was stolen through fraud. The banking sector needs to use data to identify trends and mitigate future scams from harming the industry. This project takes a look at clients whose cards were found on the dark web. By analyzing historical data, we can uncover patterns that are invisible to the naked eye.

I chose this project because it perfectly aligns with my interest in bridging the gap between data science and the banking industry. As a student of Data Science (FinTech) at Greenwich University, I wanted to apply my academic and professional knowledge to a real-world scenario that demonstrates my skills in a comprehensive way. This project testament to my ability to:

• Think Strategically: By identifying a relevant business problem to solve.

• Apply data engineering principles: By handling a full data lifecycle, from collection and cleaning to transformation and storage by using Airflow, Dbt, Docker, and Python for the first time to complete this.

• Perform advanced analytics: By using statistical methods and data visualization to uncover meaningful insights.

This documentation is not just a portfolio piece, but a detailed accounting of my process, showcasing the value that a data-driven approach can bring to any organization.
