How to perform Reiki healing on myself?

In the chaos of contemporary living, where do you go to replenish? What if the deep serenity and healing you yearn for is not out there waiting, but within you, waiting to be released?
This is the lovely promise of Self-Reiki.
Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese method for reducing stress and relaxing that also facilitates healing. It’s given by “laying on hands” and is founded upon the theory that there exists an invisible “life force energy” that passes through us. When the energy is low, we are susceptible to illness or experiencing stress; when it is high, we are able to be healthy and happy.
Whereas Reiki is sometimes done by practitioners, perhaps the most empowering thing about it is that you can learn to do it for yourself easily. It is like a moving meditation, a means of channeling loving, healing energy to your own body, mind, and spirit.
You are not only the patient; you are also the healer.
Why Practice Self-Reiki? The Benefits Are Real
Reduces Stress & Anxiety: It engages the parasympathetic nervous system, moving your body out of “fight-or-flight” and into “rest-and-digest.”
Promotes Deep Relaxation: It quiets the mental chatter and invites a profound state of calm.
Eases Physical Pain & Discomfort: By facilitating energy flow, it can ease tension, headaches, and minor aches.
Supports Emotional Balance: It’s a great tool to process emotions and release what no longer serves you.
Enhances Sleep: A consistent practice can soothe your mind at night, resulting in better-quality sleep.
Empowers Your Self-Care Practice: It provides you with a quick, always-at-hand method to care for yourself.
Beginning: Your First Self-Reiki Session
The best part about Self-Reiki is how easy it is. You don’t require any equipment or even a completely quiet room (though that is pleasant!). You just need yourself, some time, and an intention to heal.
Step 1: Get Your Space and Yourself Ready
Choose a quiet area where you won’t be disturbed for 15–20 minutes. You can either sit up straight in a good chair with your feet planted firmly on the floor, or lie down. The most important thing is to have your spine straight so energy can move freely.
Turn off your notifications, set your phone to airplane mode, and maybe even listen to some mellow, instrumental music if you’re so inclined. You may choose to dim the lights.
Step 2: Set Your Intention
Breathe in deeply, cleansing yourselves of the day’s stresses. Slowly inhale through your nose, and fully exhale through your mouth. Release the stresses of the day as you breathe.
Gently place your hands in the Gassho position (palms together at your heart center). This is a gesture of respect and connection. Silently set an intention for your session. It can be as simple as, “May this energy bring me peace and healing,” or more specific, like, “I send healing energy to my tired shoulders.”
Step 3: The Self-Treatment Hand Positions
A complete self-treatment consists of placing your hands on or above 12–15 points on your body, encompassing the main organs and energy centers (chakras). But don’t be perfect as a beginner! Begin with these important places. Hold each point for 2–5 minutes, or until you experience a shift (sensation of warmth, tingling, pulsating, or merely a deep feeling of peace).
The Eyes: Place your hands over your closed eyes, cupped gently. This is extremely calming for mental tension and headaches.
The Sides of the Head: Shift your hands to cover the sides of your head, with your fingertips resting on your temples.
The Back of the Head: Cup the back of your head (the occipital lobe) in your hands. This is a huge reservoir for stress.
The Throat: Place one hand on your throat and one on the top of your chest. Facilitates communication and expression.
The Heart Center: Place both hands over the middle of your chest. This dynamic position promotes love, compassion, and healing of emotions.
The Solar Plexus: Place your hands down on your upper abdomen, below your ribcage. This is the source of your own personal power and gut instincts.
Lower Abdomen: Put your hands below your navel. This is associated with creativity and stability.
Lower Back/Sacrum: If you are able to reach easily, put your hands on your lower back. You can also work this area by bringing your intention to this spot after having worked on the lower abdomen.
Pro Tip: You can’t get it wrong. If a spot needs more attention, linger longer there. If you do fall asleep, that’s fine too! Your body was embracing the healing it required most.
Step 4: Closing the Session
When you are finished (typically after 15–30 minutes), bring your awareness slowly back to the room. Flick your fingers and toes. Take a few more deep breaths.
Bring your hands back to the Gassho position at your heart. Allow yourself a moment of appreciation for this time you’ve taken for your own well-being. You may quietly say “thank you” to yourself and the Reiki energy.
Drink a full glass of water to assist with balancing out the energy and eliminating any toxins that have been released.
Key Tips for Your Practice
Consistency Over Duration: Practicing for 10 minutes every day is much more potent than practicing for one hour monthly.
You are a Channel: Keep in mind, you are not creating the healing energy from your personal supply; you are a channel for universal life force energy. You cannot exhaust yourself.
Trust the Process: There are some days you’ll feel the sensations intensely, and other days not at all. Don’t worry, this is natural. Trust that energy is moving where it is most needed.
Formal Training: Although self-practice is effective, having a Reiki Level I attunement from a Reiki Master is the classical method to fully open yourself as a channel. It’s a sacred process that enhances your capacity to connect with Reiki energy.
