Do you remember the last time Cristiano Ronaldo won a major league or cup title at club level? It’s natural not to remember. CR7 hasn’t won a major title for his club in almost 3 seasons. The Portuguese superstar has once again suffered the pain of a broken dream in yet another final.

Ronaldo’s team Al Nasr lost 5-3 on penalties to Al Ahli in the Saudi Super Cup final. The ninety-minute match before the penalty shootout ended in a 2-2 draw. Ronaldo could not overcome the trophy win for Al Nasr in Saudi football by losing on penalties.

Ronaldo signed for the Saudi club Al Nasr in January 2023. After that, the 40-year-old Portuguese star could not win any other title except the Arab Club Champions Cup. Meanwhile, the organizer of the Arab Club Champions Cup is not recognized by FIFA. Since it is mainly played by invited teams, it is not considered a top-level tournament.

The four-team Saudi Super Cup features the champions and runners-up of the last Pro League and King’s Cup. Al Ittihad won both the Pro League and King’s Cup in the 2024-25 season, making Al Nasr the third team in the Pro League to qualify for the Super Cup. On the other hand, Al Hilal withdrew their name due to the FIFA Club World Cup and preparations for the new season, and Al Ahli, who finished fifth in the Pro League, qualified.

Al Ahly beat Al Ittihad 2-1, Al Nasr 5-1 and Al Qadsia 5-1 to reach the final. Al Nasr took the lead early in the final held at Hong Kong Stadium last night. Ronaldo put the team ahead in the 41st minute with a penalty kick. It was his 100th goal for the Saudi club.

Frank Casey equalised for Al Ahli in the sixth minute of added time. Marcelo Brozovic put Al Nasr ahead in the 82nd minute with the match still tied at 1-1. Ronaldo’s first title in the Saudi club seemed within reach. However, Roger Ibanez equalised for Al Ahli in the 89th minute, sending the match to a tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, both Al Ahli and Al Nasr had their first three shots on target. However, Al Ahli’s Feras Albrikan took the fourth shot but Al Nasr’s Abdullah Al-Khaibari missed. Galeno scored for Ahli with his fifth shot, but Ronaldo’s Al Nasr lost the match there.
