Can I Read Quran on My Period – Is It Allowed.

Can I Read Quran on My Period – Is It Allowed. Reading and reciting the Quran is one of the greatest acts of worship for Muslims. However, many women often ask: “Can I read the Quran on my period?” This question arises due to differences in opinions among Islamic scholars regarding the state of ritual purity (taharah) and the rulings related to menstruation.
In this article, we will explore scholarly opinions, authentic references, and practical guidance to clarify whether women are allowed to read or recite the Quran during menstruation.
Understanding the Concept of Ritual Purity in Islam
In Islam, ritual purity (taharah) is an important requirement for certain acts of worship, such as salah (prayer) and touching the Mushaf (physical copy of the Quran).
Menstruation (hayd) is a natural biological process that Allah has written for women, and it is not considered a sin or impurity in itself.
However, certain acts of worship are paused during menstruation, such as salah and fasting, as indicated in authentic hadith.
The Different Scholarly Opinions
The Majority View (Hanafi, Shafi‘i, Hanbali Scholars)
Most scholars from these schools of thought say that women in menstruation should not recite the Quran directly from the Mushaf or from memory.
They base this on the hadith:
“Neither the menstruating woman nor the one in a state of janabah should recite anything of the Qur’an.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 131)
However, many scholars consider this hadith weak, which has led to differing interpretations.
The Maliki View
The Maliki school allows women to recite the Quran during menstruation, especially if they fear forgetting memorized portions or need to study.
They differentiate between recitation for worship and recitation for learning or dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
Modern Scholars’ Opinions
Many contemporary scholars allow women to read the Quran from mobile apps or digital devices since it does not involve directly touching the Mushaf.
Reciting verses for dua, dhikr, or protection (such as Ayat-ul-Kursi, Surah Al-Fatihah, or Surah Al-Ikhlas) is also generally considered permissible.
Conclusion
So, can you read the Quran on your period?
According to the majority of scholars: You should avoid direct recitation and touching of the Mushaf.
According to Maliki and some modern scholars: It is allowed, especially for remembrance, learning, and fear of forgetting memorized portions.
Permissible alternatives: Using Quran apps, reciting from memory, and making dhikr and dua.
In the end, Allah knows your intentions. The most important thing is to keep your heart connected to the Quran and maintain remembrance of Allah during all states.
