Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), closing a remarkable chapter that spanned 16 years. The announcement comes just months after he stepped away from international cricket during India’s 2024-25 tour of Australia.

Ashwin, who remains India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 scalps, behind only Anil Kumble, played a defining role in shaping modern Indian spin bowling. Known for his tactical brilliance and ability to adapt across formats, the off-spinner was also a valuable contributor to several IPL franchises over the years, including Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

In his retirement note, Ashwin said, “My time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.” The statement hints at his next journey—participating in global T20 leagues, where his experience and cricketing intellect are expected to make a strong impact.

Ashwin’s exit marks the end of an era in the IPL, where he not only picked crucial wickets but also redefined the role of spinners in the shortest format. His career leaves behind a legacy of innovation, resilience, and leadership, inspiring a generation of cricketers.
