“Rohit Sharma’s bat always looked massive to me” – Mark Wood names him the toughest batter he has ever bowled to

England pacer Mark Wood has described Rohit Sharma as the toughest batter he has faced so far. Wood highlighted Rohit’s proficiency against short-pitched deliveries, noting that it makes bowling to him particularly challenging.
Looking ahead, Wood is eager to make his return to the Test side for the upcoming Ashes 2025-26 series, scheduled to begin in November. He missed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year due to a knee injury.
Statistically, Rohit Sharma has fared well against Wood. In nine ODIs, he has scored 113 runs at an average of 56.50, being dismissed twice. In T20Is, Rohit has maintained a strike rate of 133 across three encounters, getting out once. In Tests, he has accumulated 92 runs over four matches against the English pacer.
Mark Wood Names Rohit Sharma as His Toughest Opponent
During a podcast on The Overlap Cricket YouTube channel, England pacer Mark Wood revealed the batters he considers the toughest he’s faced in his career. While he mentioned Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Marsh, Wood singled out Rohit as the most challenging.
“At different stages of my career, I’d say Rohit Sharma. He’s difficult because even against the short ball, I’d feel like I had a chance to get him out—but if he’s on form, he just smokes it. I always felt like his bat looked huge, constantly getting wider,” Wood explained.
He added, “Kohli, obviously, is an unbelievable competitor. I thought I could exploit a weakness by dragging him on the fourth or fifth stump, but he never missed. Smith is so unorthodox; you think you can get him LBW, but he rarely misses. And then there’s Marsh.”
Wood last represented England during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, playing two matches and taking one wicket. He is expected to be a key pacer for England in The Ashes 2025-26 in Australia.
The right-arm seamer is not part of England’s squad for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa in September. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will next lead India in the three-match ODI series against Australia in October.
