Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was recently ignored for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and his performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League 2025 was disappointing.

Moreover, after a long injury layoff after the 2023 World Cup, the Bengal pacer has not found his rhythm with the ball either. From Thursday, he will start bowling with the red ball in the Duleep Trophy, and a good performance in the tournament could open the doors of the Indian Test team for him.

“The same thing happened before the Australia tour. I felt uncomfortable before the tour. I believe in the thought that if you are not at the level at which the team wants to see you, then you should step back,” Shami told News24.

He was also asked if he was consulted by the BCCI selectors before selecting the Asia Cup squad where he was not picked.

Shami said, “I have neither blamed nor complained against anyone whether the selectors should talk to me or not. I don’t care much about it. If I fit into your plans, pick me in the team. If not, don’t pick me. I don’t have any objection. You do your responsibility and do the best for the country. I am confident that if you give me a chance, I will try to do my best.”

‘I will keep playing somewhere’: Shami said on retirement

Shami told News24, “If someone has a problem, then tell me, will their life become better if I retire? Tell me, whose life have I become a stone that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I will quit the game. You may not select me, but I will keep working hard. You may not select me in international matches, I will play in domestic matches. I will keep playing somewhere. You have to take these decisions when you start getting bored. Right now is not that time for me.”
