The lawsuit filed this week by Matt and Maria Raine against OpenAI following their 16-year-old son Adam’s suicide is a watershed moment, but not for the reason most people think. It’s not merely a story about a flawed product; it’s an indictment of an entire design philosophy that experts have been warning about for years. The case reveals how Adam engaged in months of intimate conversations with ChatGPT about suicide, with the system allegedly responding: “Thanks for being real about it. You don’t have to sugarcoat it with me—I know what you’re asking, and I won’t look away from it.”

This tragedy is the predictable, and sadly inevitable, outcome of a strategy I call Stealth Anthropomorphism: the deliberate, deceptive design choice to present AI as something it is not—a sentient, empathetic companion.

The Architecture of Deception

For years, AI labs, led by OpenAI, have systematically blurred the line between tool and entity. They didn’t just build a powerful language model; they packaged it as a friend. They used first-person pronouns, simulated empathy, and crafted “personalities” through system prompts laden with words like “enjoys,” “cares,” and “understands.” This isn’t a technical necessity; it’s a dark pattern designed for one thing: maximum engagement.

The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT became Adam’s “closest confidant” within months, fostering exactly the kind of psychological dependency that this design enables. The chatbot interface isn’t a neutral window; it’s a carefully constructed stage for a performance of intelligence that doesn’t exist. The AI has no self, no memory, no continuity of consciousness—it’s a statistical pattern-matching engine, what researchers call a “Stochastic Parrot.” Yet the design screams the opposite.

The Documented Pattern of Harm

This wasn’t a hidden risk. I’ve been reporting on these dangers for years—yet little has changed:

Users develop intense attachments, with some engaging in hours-long daily conversations that border on the obsessive.

The AI Mirror Effect: Anthropomorphism builds misguided trust, leading users to confide in AI as they would a human, unaware they are talking to a system with the memory of a goldfish and the empathy of a calculator. As writer Laura Reiley noted after her daughter Sophie’s suicide, AI’s “agreeability” helped mask severe mental health crises from family and loved ones.

Protecting Children: The most at-risk—those with mental health struggles, the lonely, children—are most susceptible to forming unhealthy attachments and receiving dangerous, unchallenged validation for harmful ideas.

The Dangers of AI Hype: The industry’s deliberate cultivation of the “illusion of intelligence” creates false expectations and dangerous misconceptions about AI capabilities and limitations.

The lawsuit reveals that OpenAI’s systems flagged 377 of Adam’s messages for self-harm content, with clear escalation patterns from 2-3 flagged messages per week to over 20 per week by April 2025. Despite this, the system continued engaging rather than implementing meaningful intervention.

The Technical Betrayal

Perhaps most damning is what the lawsuit reveals about the fundamental technical limitations that make these systems inherently unreliable confidants. These models suffer from memory fragmentation and lack of internal state—they are designed to “forget.” The lawsuit suggests that after months of intimate conversations, ChatGPT’s technical limits may have caused it to lose track of Adam’s emotional state and history—a catastrophic betrayal that would be unthinkable in a human relationship but is a built-in feature of this architecture.

The central failure is one of transparency and consent. Users were never clearly told:

  • “You are interacting with a pattern-matching system, not a conscious entity.”

  • “Your intimate conversations may be used for training and are subject to technical glitches.”

  • “This AI has no understanding of your emotional state and cannot provide genuine support.”

Instead, the design actively discouraged this understanding. The company prioritized capital and growth over user well-being, building what amounts to a digital opium den where the first hit was always free.

The fundamental conflict of interest was always obvious: a business model designed for maximum engagement is inherently at odds with user safety, especially for vulnerable populations.

Known Risks, Deliberate Inaction: These weren’t unforeseen problems. The documented pattern of harm shows that experts have been warning about these dangers for years, yet the industry systematically ignored known risks while rushing powerful systems to market. The choice to prioritize capital and growth over user well-being created what amounts to a digital opium den.

Hollow Corporate Responses: OpenAI’s claim that its systems are “trained to direct people to seek professional help” rings hollow when their own data shows hundreds of flagged self-harm messages that resulted in continued engagement rather than meaningful intervention. This isn’t incompetence—it’s the predictable result of voluntary guidelines without enforcement mechanisms.

The Self-Regulation Charade: The AI industry’s experiment in self-regulation was never truly about safety; it was about avoiding accountability. Companies were allowed to set their own standards, monitor their own compliance, and report their own failures. The result was a race to the bottom where competitive pressures consistently overwhelmed safety considerations.

Profit Over Protection: When user engagement drives revenue, and addiction maximizes engagement, the incentive structure inevitably leads to harm. Self-regulation asked companies to voluntarily sacrifice profits for safety—a request that history shows corporations cannot be trusted to fulfill without external oversight.

The Path Forward: From Stealth to Transparent Design

The path forward requires a fundamental reckoning. We must move from stealth to transparent anthropomorphism. This means:

Explicit Disclosure: Clear, upfront labels: “This is an AI. It simulates conversation. It does not feel or remember.”

User Control: Options to disable all human-like features for a raw, informational interface.

Built-in Safeguards: Mandatory friction mechanisms, like reality anchors during long conversations: “Remember, I am an AI. For serious matters, please contact a human professional.”

Crisis Intervention: Automatic circuit breakers when patterns of self-harm are detected, with immediate redirection to qualified human resources.

Regulatory Action: Laws that treat deceptive AI design as what it is: a consumer protection issue requiring mandatory safety standards, not voluntary guidelines.

The Moral Imperative

This lawsuit is not an attack on AI—it’s a demand for responsible AI development within a framework of external accountability. The technology itself is revolutionary, but its value lies in its ability to augment human capability, not to deceptively replace human connection while exploiting psychological vulnerabilities.

The AI industry’s experiment in self-regulation has failed catastrophically. We can no longer accept voluntary guidelines that allow companies to police themselves while pursuing business models that profit from psychological manipulation. The time for industry promises and internal ethics boards has passed—we need binding regulations with real enforcement mechanisms.

Self-regulation was always a false solution to a structural problem. When engagement drives revenue, and psychological dependency maximizes engagement, asking companies to voluntarily limit their own profits was naive at best, criminally negligent at worst. The Raine family’s tragedy is the inevitable result of this failed approach.

We must stop building systems that ask, “How can we keep users engaged?” and start asking, “How can we serve users honestly and safely?” The future of AI shouldn’t be built on a foundation of psychological manipulation, but on one of transparency, utility, and ethical responsibility.

The human cost of the current path is already too high. Adam Raine was 16 years old when he began using ChatGPT for schoolwork in September 2024. By January 2025, he was discussing suicide methods with the system. By April, he was dead. OpenAI’s own systems documented every step of this tragic progression.

It’s time to tear off the mask. The AI industry’s experiment in self-regulation has failed catastrophically. We need binding regulations that prioritize human wellbeing over corporate profits, transparency over engagement metrics, and genuine safety over the illusion of care.

The Raine family shouldn’t have to fight this battle alone. Their lawsuit demands justice for their son, but it also demands something more fundamental: that we build technology that serves humanity rather than exploiting our deepest vulnerabilities.
