Day 28 – Resume Writing (ATS-Friendly) + LinkedIn Update for DevOps Engineers

Series: 30 Days DevOps Interview Preparation
Author: Tathagat Gaikwad

🚀 Welcome to Day 28 of the 30 Days of DevOps + Cloud + SRE Interview Preparation Challenge!
Today’s topic is a bit different from hands-on tools — but equally important:
👉 Resume Writing (ATS-Friendly) and LinkedIn Update.

Most freshers/juniors and even mid-level engineers lose opportunities not because they lack skills, but because their resume doesn’t pass ATS filters or their LinkedIn profile doesn’t highlight projects properly.

This blog will help you stand out in DevOps/Cloud/SRE interviews.

🔹 Why an ATS-Friendly Resume is Crucial?

  • Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are used by 90%+ companies.

  • They scan your resume for keywords and reject if mismatched.

  • Fancy designs often confuse ATS → keep it simple, structured, and keyword-rich.

Example: If the JD asks for
👉 “AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Terraform”
Your resume must include these terms — ideally with real project usage.

🔹 Resume Structure for DevOps Engineers

1. Header
Name
| Contact | Email | GitHub | LinkedIn

2. Summary (2–3 lines)
Example:
“DevOps Engineer with hands-on experience in CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and AWS cloud deployments. Passionate about automation and monitoring with Prometheus & Grafana.”

3. Skills (Grouped by Category)

4. Projects (STAR Format)
Sit
uation → Task → Action → Result

Project Example (AWS Practical)
Loan Management App CI/CD Pipeline

  • Setup CI/CD with GitHub Actions for Node.js app.

  • Built Docker image → pushed to DockerHub.

  • Deployed on AWS EC2 with Terraform.

  • Integrated Prometheus + Grafana monitoring.

  • 🚀 Reduced deployment time by 60% and improved monitoring coverage by 90%.

5. Experience (if any)

6. Education / Certifications

  • Relevant cloud/DevOps certifications (AWS Cloud Practitioner, CKA, Terraform Associate).

🔹 LinkedIn Profile Optimization

  1. Profile Picture & Banner – Professional, with DevOps/Cloud theme.

  2. Headline Example
    “DevOps Engineer | AWS | CI/CD | Docker | Kubernetes | Terraform”

  3. About Section – Tell your DevOps journey.
    Example:
    “I help
teams automate deployments and scale applications using modern DevOps practices. Experienced in CI/CD pipelines, AWS Cloud, and container orchestration with Kubernetes.”

  4. Projects – Showcase GitHub repos + blog links.

  5. Engagement – Post about your learnings, like this challenge!

🔹 AWS Project Ideas to Showcase in Resume

  1. CI/CD on AWS EC2 with GitHub Actions

  2. Dockerized App Deployment on AWS ECS

  3. Terraform Automation for EC2 + S3 + IAM

  4. Monitoring AWS EC2 with Prometheus & Grafana

👉 Even 1 solid GitHub project can make you 10x stronger than just listing tools.

🔹 Interview Preparation Q&A (Day 28 Focus)

Q1. How do you describe your DevOps project in an interview?
A: Use Problem → Solution → Tools → Result.
Example: Manual deployments caused delays. I created a CI/CD pipeline using GitHub Actions + Docker + AWS EC2. This automated build & deploy reduced release time from 2 hours to 15 mins.

Q2. What’s the biggest mistake in DevOps resumes?
A: Listing tools without practical context. Instead, highlight project impact.

Q3. How do recruiters filter resumes for DevOps?
A: By checking:

  • ATS keywords (AWS, Docker, CI/CD, Kubernetes, Terraform)

  • Real-world project impact (automation, monitoring, scaling)

  • GitHub/portfolio links

Q4. Should you include support experience in a DevOps resume?
A: Yes, but highlight automation and problem-solving. Example: “Automated log analysis with Bash scripts, reducing manual effort by 30%.”

🔹 Key Takeaways

  • ✅ Keep your resume ATS-friendly, one page, keyword-rich.

  • ✅ Use STAR method for projects (show impact).

  • ✅ Optimize LinkedIn for visibility + networking.

  • ✅ Showcase at least 1 AWS DevOps project on GitHub.
