10 Years in Crypto Grateful That Crypto Changed My Fate

1. First Time Eating KFC
While spending time with my child today, I ordered two portions of KFC’s New Orleans Wings. Seeing my baby enjoy the meal, I reflected on my past experiences.
Before finishing university, I had only tasted KFC once. That was during high school when my cousin married a woman from a county town. Her family worked in real estate, placing them above our social standing, but she treated us to a meal. My brother chose a family bucket—it felt like a celebration. Although he and that cousin-in-law later separated, I remain grateful to her. She introduced me to KFC and revealed such delicious food existed.
My younger brother was present too; he even complained it wasn’t tasty. My brother responded, "If you’d said so earlier, we’d still be hungry." In the 2010s, KFC was a rare luxury in our area. Back then, my brother and his wife were deeply affectionate, and she showed great care for me and my brother, knowing we came from rural roots.
At university, KFC remained unaffordable, but I discovered a cheaper option called Wallace. Once, at my ex-boyfriend’s place, I ordered 50 RMB worth of Wallace food. He remarked, "You sure know how to splurge—just don’t let my dad see this." Fifty RMB was a significant sum for us then. We secretly devoured those Wallace burgers in his room. They were delightful, and every burp brought a wave of joy. However, that moment highlighted our incompatibility: he viewed 50 RMB as too precious for such indulgences, while my taste buds craved the life I desired.
Eating KFC Again
Later, while working at a clothing store, the manager from Anhui favored noodles. I found noodles unsatisfying and often unpleasant, sometimes even disgusting. Once, I ate shredded pork with pickled vegetables noodles and discovered a fly in the mix. When I informed the plump auntie, she dismissed it, saying flies contain protein. Unhappy but resigned, I paid anyway. 😭
On days without packed lunch, I’d order the work meal. KFC offered combos around 18 to 20 RMB, always including cola. I adored the New Orleans Wings but couldn’t afford them alone. If part of a combo, I’d treat myself to a satisfying meal. My salary was 3500 RMB then. After six months, I saved enough to buy a washing machine and TV for my family, earning praise from village elders. Everyone thought I was thriving away from home. Yet, I struggled immensely. I despised bus rides due to motion sickness; commuting for morning and evening shifts left me deeply depressed.
2. Entering Crypto and Saying Goodbye to KFC
In late 2015, I met my first boss by hailing his BMW via Didi. Didi had just launched in Nanjing, with rides costing just over 2 RMB. Buses were 2 RMB too, but transfers totaled 4 RMB, so Didi was my natural choice. My boss sensed my openness after I attended an Amway course in his car. He figured if I embraced Amway, I’d be receptive to crypto or financial schemes. He ran crypto-based pyramid schemes. Fresh out of school, I knew little; during meetings, I diligently assisted his clients. Once, for business, he introduced #Bitcoin and #Ethereum. My eyes sparkled—Ethereum had plunged from over $20 to $3, leaving users despondent, then surged past $800 (details are hazy, may be slightly off). I first used Yunbi exchange, researching deposits and withdrawals at home.
Sadly, from late 2016 to 2017, I missed a 20 million RMB opportunity. Yunbi hosted coins like SC that soared a thousand-fold. I nearly ranked among the platform’s top 100 holders but sold after fluctuations. Crypto ignited my greed. From then on, I scorned working for others and enrolled in a semi-pyramid course costing about 80,000 RMB. How could someone earning 3500 monthly afford that? Loans, credit cards, and online lending became my lifelines. For years, I drowned in debt. I borrowed 30,000 RMB and repaid over 50,000 to Yirendai in under a year—a vivid memory. Later, the course company collapsed, squeezing people like me dry. Businesses failed, marriages ended, and young debtors like me suffered.
During that course, I met a scoundrel who tricked me into fake forex in 2017, costing me and friends over 100,000 RMB. By then, I’d lost the privilege to sit and enjoy KFC. After my university internship and graduation, I passed a KFC, swallowing hard. In a small chat group, I confided to elders about craving KFC for a splurge. One lady offered 50 RMB to indulge, but I declined.
3. The Days Without KFC Qualifications
Borrowed 80,000 to All In on #EOS
In my darkest, most indebted days during the 2017 crypto bull market after the ‘94 incident’, many coins surged hundreds to thousands of times. My EOS holdings on an exchange multiplied tenfold, yielding tens of thousands. This opened my eyes.
Borrowing Money Revealed People’s True Colors
Everyone praised my potential and hard work. But when I sought loans, a kind lady turned fierce, claiming she was at KTV, couldn’t hear me, had no money, and told me to ask others. She’d once said she pitied me and wanted to give 5,000 RMB. The shift left me speechless.
Decided to Borrow 80,000 Online
I found an eager young lender online who charged high interest. Fortunately, a senior Chinese ICP investor and ambassador I call "Senior Brother" met me once in Nanjing and gifted 50,000 RMB, advising against more borrowing. He hailed from Shandong—I still recall his kindness. But I stayed poor. The ICP private sale we joined never issued tokens for years in the bear market. Eventually, my senior brother ran dry and demanded repayment. I was likely pregnant then, drowning in debt with no funds. I felt truly remorseful. When ICP tokens finally released, the private sale covered 50,000 RMB of my debt. Yet my brother was heartbroken.
