Welcome to the Emerging Technology of the Month Series
The Virginia Board of Directors, Emerging Technology team proudly presents the "Emerging Technology of the Month" series, rolling out first in the BIT Alexandria Chapter! Each month our featurette will spotlight the latest advancements transforming our world. Each month, a member of our talented team of Emerging Technology Coordinators from across the state, will delve into a cutting-edge technology, exploring its implications, benefits, and the pioneering figures driving its progress. Our goal is to inspire, inform, and expand access to future technologies, fostering a community of innovation and inclusivity.

What Is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics applies computational methods to biological data analysis, aiding in genomics, proteomics, and other biological research areas. This innovative field merges biology, computer science, and information technology to unlock insights into biological data. Bioinformatics facilitates the understanding of complex biological processes, accelerates the discovery of new medical treatments, and enhances data sharing and collaboration across research institutions.

Key Features and Benefits of Bioinformatics

  • Genomic Sequencing and Analysis: Identifying genetic variations and their implications.

  • Personalized Medicine: Tailoring treatments based on individual genetic profiles.

  • Drug Discovery and Development: Accelerating the identification of drug targets.

  • Comparative Genomics: Studying evolutionary relationships between species.

Spotlight on Black Excellence in Bioinformatics: Dr. Georgia Dunston

We celebrate Dr. Georgia Dunston, a renowned geneticist and professor from Norfolk, Virginia, who has made significant contributions to the field of bioinformatics. She attended Norfolk State University, an HBCU, where she began her illustrious academic journey. As the founding director of the National Human Genome Center at Howard University, Dr. Dunston’s research focuses on the genetic diversity of African American populations and its implications for health disparities.

Dr. Dunston’s work on the African American Genome Project has provided invaluable insights into genetic diversity and its role in disease susceptibility. Her contributions have led to a greater understanding of health disparities and the development of personalized medical approaches for underrepresented populations.

Thank you for your contributions to Emerging Technologies, Bioinformatics and future of STEM Dr Georgia Dunston!
