BCCI and IPL Chairman Address Stampede During RCB Celebrations

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which organizes the IPL, called the stampede incident during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) post-title celebrations “unfortunate.” Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, acknowledged the overwhelming passion of fans but pointed out that the event organizers should have planned the gathering better to avoid such chaos. He emphasized that the tragedy highlighted the need for stricter rules and improved arrangements for future victory celebrations.

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. He clarified that the BCCI was not informed about the celebration event beforehand and therefore could not have prepared for or managed the crowd. Dhumal stressed that those inside the stadium, including the players, were unaware of the tragedy unfolding outside. He also said that if such events are planned in the future, proper safety and crowd control measures must be in place to prevent similar incidents.

Despite the chaos outside, RCB’s official felicitation ceremony inside the packed M Chinnaswamy Stadium proceeded as scheduled. However, the planned open-top bus parade was canceled by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in light of the tragedy. Virat Kohli and captain Rajat Patidar addressed the enthusiastic crowd before taking the trophy around the stadium, celebrating RCB’s maiden IPL title.
