Shubman Gill: Indian cricket legends praised the team’s impressive 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, which also brought the series level at 1-1.

India Ends Edgbaston Hoodoo with Dominant Win Led by Shubman Gill and Akash Deep

India’s long wait for a Test victory at Edgbaston finally ended emphatically on Sunday, as Akash Deep’s 10-wicket match haul and Shubman Gill’s batting masterclass powered a commanding 336-run win over England in the second Test. This victory not only leveled the five-match series 1-1 but also marked India’s biggest-ever overseas Test win by runs.

Chasing a world-record target of 608, England folded for 271 shortly before Tea on Day 5. Akash Deep, drafted into the playing XI after Jasprit Bumrah was rested, delivered a dream performance with figures of 6/99 in the second innings, adding to his four wickets in the first. The 28-year-old tore through England’s top order and sealed the match by dismissing the in-form Jamie Smith for 88—caught brilliantly by Gill, symbolizing his leadership and pivotal role throughout the game.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar praised India’s dominance, tweeting, “A Shublime innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings.” He highlighted India’s strategic approach to take England out of their comfort zone and force a decisive result.

Tendulkar added, “What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled. Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root.”

P.S. He also enjoyed the spectacular catch taken by Mohammad “Jonty” Siraj.

Before this historic win, India had never triumphed in eight previous Test visits to Edgbaston, losing seven times. The venue was also where England famously chased down a record 378-run fourth-innings target against India in 2022. But this time, there was no comeback for Ben Stokes’ side.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly praised the team’s stellar performance, writing on his X profile, “What a performance from Shubman Gill and his team… with the bat and now with the ball. Akash Deep and Siraj just brilliant. Indian attack looking far superior to the English attack… Akash Deep and Siraj are workhorses. India win without Bumrah… Can’t be a better result with the fantastic Gill in charge. What a fantastic batting effort.”

An all-round performance

Shubman Gill

The five-day Test was dominated by Shubman Gill’s majestic 269 in the first innings and a rapid 161 off 162 balls in the second. His match aggregate of 430 runs ranks among the highest ever by a visiting captain in England. Beyond his batting heroics, the 24-year-old showcased exceptional leadership, expertly managing his bowlers—especially on Day 5 when he tactically rotated Akash Deep, Siraj, and the spinners after the rain delay.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman praised the team’s resilience and Gill’s captaincy, tweeting, “Well done, Team India on an exceptional victory! It was amazing to see the team’s fighting spirit and resilience. Congratulations Shubman on an outstanding match with the bat and for leading the team with such poise. A great start to your captaincy. Also great effort from Siraj and Akash Deep. Wishing you all the best for your future matches. #ENGvIND.”

Riding high on their emphatic win at Edgbaston, India now heads to Lord’s brimming with renewed belief and momentum. While Jasprit Bumrah is set to return for the third Test, the stellar performances of Shubman Gill and Akash Deep have reinforced India’s bench strength, signaling a bright and secure future for the team.
