Mandating Mental Health Education in Indian Schools: A PIL That Could Save Lives

India has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Each statistic is not just a number—it’s a young life lost too soon.
This is why a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed, urging the Indian government to mandate mental health education in schools. The petition, initiated on Change.org, calls for structured emotional wellness curricula in schools to equip students with the tools to recognize, express, and seek help for mental health struggles.
At its core, the PIL isn’t just about policy—it’s about prevention, compassion, and early intervention.
Teaching students to value their mental well-being is just as vital as math or science. With suicide being the leading cause of death in youth aged 15–24 in India, we can no longer treat mental health as taboo.
If implemented, this movement could redefine India’s education system—making empathy, resilience, and self-awareness just as important as exam scores.
