Opening with Real-World Data

A major new global study reveals a deeply concerning link between early smartphone ownership and mental health issues later in life. Young adults aged 18 to 24 who first got a smartphone at age 12 or younger were significantly more likely to report suicidal thoughts, aggression, detachment from reality, emotional dysregulation, and low self-worth. These outcomes are closely tied to early access to social media, cyberbullying, disrupted sleep, and weakened family relationships.

Complementing that, a recent longitudinal study spanning seven months and involving nearly 1,500 participants found that internet behaviors correlate with stress in very specific ways. For example, social media, gaming, and online shopping were consistently associated with higher stress levels, while browsing productivity-related content or news was linked to lower stress.

Bringing It Full Circle

Let’s return for a moment to the findings we opened with. Young people exposed to smartphones early face alarming risk factors, from emotional detachment to suicidal ideation. And certain internet habits particularly social media and gaming are consistently linked to higher stress. These realities call for a compassionate, informed response.

That’s precisely where we step in. At Lucent, we help individuals navigate their digital worlds more mindfully, reduce technology-driven stress, rebuild emotional resilience, and reconnect with themselves and those around them.
