India vs Pakistan match in Asia Cup 2025 is set for September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Ahead of the tournament, Pakistan Cricket Team’s chief selector Aaqib Javed made a bold claim, expressing confidence that Pakistan can defeat India. On Sunday, August 17, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup.
Salman Ali Agha will lead the team, while notable stars like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Naseem Shah were surprisingly left out. However, senior players including Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shaheen Shah Afridi secured their spots in the squad.
Aaqib Javed Confident Pakistan Can Defeat India in Asia Cup 2025
During the announcement of Pakistan’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, PCB chief selector Aaqib Javed expressed confidence in the team’s ability to defeat India. “Pakistan’s T20 side can beat India. Matches between these two teams are always huge. This 17-member squad has the potential to take on any opponent. We shouldn’t pressure them, but I have high hopes,” Javed said.
Addressing the omission of senior players Rizwan and Azam, he clarified that they have not been completely sidelined from T20Is and could return if they perform well.
“It’s not that they are out of the picture entirely. Current selections reflect player development. Look at examples like Sahibzada Farhan, Saim, and Fakhar—Sahibzada made a comeback, Saim initially struggled but later made an impact,” he explained.
“Opportunities always exist; performance is what matters. Right now, players are gaining experience in leagues like the Big Bash and PSL. Those who perform will play,” he added.
For the tournament, Group A includes India, Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, with India and Pakistan expected to face each other again in the Super Four stage. If they reach the final, they could meet up to three times.
Group B features Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong, with the top two from each group advancing to the Super Four. The Asia Cup 2025 final is scheduled for September 28 in Dubai, with India entering as the defending champions.
